Telemetry Nurse , Cardiac Care Nurse, Heart Care Nurse
The change in life styles and wrong eating habits has led to life threatening health troubles, most important being heart diseases. Because of this reason the demand for nurses who specialize in cardiac care has increased over the years. Cardiac care focuses on providing early and comprehensive care for life threatening ailments like high blood pressure, stroke, and coronary diseases. The nurses of this field are trained in handling cardiac emergencies as well as in the treatment of patients suffering from long term cardiac ailments. It is the responsibility of Cardiac (heart) Care Nurse to provide heart care instructions to patients in their charge. A telemetry nurse or cardiac care nurse specializes in heart medications and connecting the patient to a heart monitor. These cardiac monitors are used to administer the patient’s heart rate, breathing rate, oxygen level in the blood, electrocardiogram data and blood pressure. Patients with multiple heart complications such as heart failure, heart surgery and heart attacks can avail the services of telemetry nurses as they not only read the monitor readings but also provide case management and implement health care programs.
To become a telemetry nurse or cardiac care nurse, it is essential to have a registered nurse (RN) license. Along with this license, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or and Associate’s Degree in Nursing is also required. There are also respiratory and cardiac courses that can be taken to further the telemetry nurses education. There is no preferred gender to this area of specialization, which means both men and women can be a telemetry or cardiac nurse.
