There are not actually very many nursing scholarships that are earmarked specifically for single mothers or single fathers. There are however several scholarships and programs that a single parent is eligible for, and there are also several nursing programs that offer scholarships, programs and other incentives to single parents from all walks of life.
- The ASIST Scholarship Program is something every single parent should check out. These scholarships are awarded to what are called “non-traditional” students. Non-traditional students are usually older adults, those who may have lost their jobs, and single parents. The ASIST Scholarship is for those in greatest financial need. Special consideration is given to those who are raising children.
- The Displaced Homemaker Scholarship is also a good program for the single parent. This scholarship is for adults over the age of thirty who may had to put their educational plans on hold in order to take care of a family.
- The Osher Reentry Scholarship Program is also for adults who may have had to delay their educational plans due to other responsibilities. The Osher Scholarship is for adult students who have been out of school for at least five years. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and a willingness to complete their degree program.
- The Department Of Health sponsors a small number of full nursing scholarships. These scholarships are offered through the Nursing Scholarship Program. Applicants may be required to work for the Health Department for two years following graduation. Anyone who is going into nursing can apply.
- Other federal programs exist for those who wish to get a degree in nursing. The American School Health Association offers a variety of scholarships and grants to those students who wish to pursue a degree in nursing. Students should be enrolled in an accredited institution or program.
- The National Student Nurses Association offers scholarships to anyone who would like to pursue a degree in nursing. These scholarships are also available to the ongoing student, no matter what level of education they are at.
- Many states offer scholarships to the nursing student as well. Texas has the Vocational Nursing Scholarship for those students enrolled in vocational programs. The Texas scholarship is one of only a few that does not require the student to work for the state after graduation.
- The state of Delaware offers the Nursing Incentive Program. This program is for state residents who are enrolled in nursing degree programs or majors. This scholarship program requires the student to work in a state run medical facility after graduation.
- The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund is made available to single parents who reside within the state of Arkansas. There are different types of scholarships available for single parents, from partial grants to full-ride scholarships. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and eligibility.
- The Gen and Kelly Tanabe Scholarship awards $1000 dollars per year to any high-school student or non-traditional student that wishes to apply. Applicants must fill out a simple form, and answer an essay question to be considered.
- The Orville Redenbacher Second Start Scholarship is for those adults who are returning to school in order to improve their lives. This award is typically $1000 per year for successful applicants. More information and an application is available on Orville Redenbacher’s website.
- The Imagine America Foundation offers $1000 scholarships to adults who may be considering a return to college. Applicants must be studying at an approved school, or in an approved program. More information is available from the foundation’s website.
