Midwifery is a health care profession that guides one to care the childbearing women in pregnancy period, labor, birth and then postpartum period. Practitioner midwifery person is said to be midwife that could be a men or a women but majority of midwives are females. Midwifery nurses gives full care to newly born baby and help the mothers in giving breastfeeding.
Besides providing care during pregnancy and birth, midwives are also responsible to give well women care, primary women care, family planning, gynecological exams and menopausal care. Midwives work in hospitals while most of them also work in home or within community.
How to become a midwife
In order to become a midwife, you need to complete your bachelor degree in Midwifery from any university. If you are already a registered nurse then you are allowed to get postgraduate advance course for achieving midwifery qualification.
Undergraduate Midwifery courses
1. B.Sc (Hons): International Midwifery studies
With this course, applicant will be able to get a global know-how of midwifery care as well as gain advanced knowledge and new skills. The duration of course is one year if you are giving full credit hours to it. It takes 2 to 5 years if you do self-study in it.
2. Pre-registration midwifery B.SC hons
After getting this course, students can develop midwife’s professional, management, and leadership and project skills. They will be able to register in nursing and midwifery council. If you became a research aware practitioner, then you will be able to fulfill the needs of mothers, babies and families. It is a three-year program.
3. Midwifery B.SC Hons
This course gives you analytical, critical, reflective, and theoretical and communication skills regarding clinical experiences. The focus of this course is to provide you with the experience to handle childbearing woman and baby. This makes up 60 percent of study in total. Full time course duration is 3 years and half time duration is 4 to 5 years. Division of course modules is as under
- You will learn theoretical and clinical experiences in the first year.
- During year 2 and year 3, students are provided with some burden in order to provide them with the opportunity to give proper care in the entire childbirth spectrum.
- At the end of year 2, elective and alternative placements are made in order to get experience in midwifery. Placement settings can be provided anywhere.
Postgraduate Midwifery courses:
1. Health studies nursing or midwifery PHD
- This course covers a wide range of topics regarding health, health education, health care practice, and health care professional education and health promotions.
- Themes that are included in this course are communication and health, clinical hypnosis and diabetes, colorectal surgery and many more.
- Full time course duration is 3 years. Part time study takes 4 to 5 years to complete.
2. Health nursing studies or midwifery MPhil
- Topics that are cover in this course are health, health education, health care practice, and health care professional education and health promotions.
- Part time duration is 2 to 3 years and full time duration is 3 years.
