The American Legion is a familiar name around the country. American Legion posts exist in almost every community, where they participate in things like youth baseball, and other community events. Originally the Legion was organized to help military veterans adjust to things like injuries, and reentering private life after discharge from the military. The American Legion has been proudly assisting soldiers for many years.

But there is more to the American Legion than that. The American Legion recognizes the need for a strong community, and actively sponsors and participates in many activities including dances, bingo nights, and other great things where people can get together.

The American Legion also recognizes that our children need to be educated. With that in mind they have drawn up scholarship programs that will help the student along the way. The American Legion primarily works with veterans and the families of veterans. Below is listed information on some of the scholarship opportunities the American Legion offers. • Many American Legion posts sponsor their own intramural baseball teams. These teams compete against other Legion teams and in charitable events around the country. American Legion Baseball has produced some fine players. The American Legion Baseball Scholarship is available to these players. Coaches may recommend one player for this award. Last year the Baseball Scholarship awarded over $20,000 to deserving players, so that they could continue on in school.

• The American Legion Legacy Scholarship was drawn up for the children of US service members who passed away on or after September 11, 2001. This scholarship is to ensure that these students receive equal opportunities when it comes to having help with college expenses. Awards vary according to availability. These awards are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis. The student can apply directly or be nominated.

• The American Legion gives a $10,000 dollar scholarship to whomever is nominated as Eagle Scout of The Year. Three runners up will receive $2500 dollars. This award is handed out every year at the national Scout convention.

• The American Legion sponsors the National High School Oratorical Contest. Scholarships are awarded to the top three finalists in this competition, which is held around the country. Students who advance to the second round will receive $1500 dollars. Students who advance to the second round but do not make it to the finals will also receive this award, in some cases twice.

Scholarship For Mexican-American Students

Getting ready to go to college should mean preparing for the chance to learn, not worrying about the chance to pay for it all. Since college isn’t offered as a free service of the government yet, students are looking for ways to get help paying the bills in school. Everything is expensive these days, and there are shortages left and right that are driving prices even higher.

There are quite a few different scholarships for Mexican-American students. Some of these scholarships are offered by private organizations. Others are offered by different schools and educational institutions. Charitable organizations can also have scholarships available.

• The CCNMA Scholarship is awarded to students of Mexican-American descent. Applicants must submit proof of enrollment in an accredited institution. Applicants must also submit educational records, and complete an essay as part of the application process. The deadline for this scholarship is April first.

• The Los Padres Foundation offers scholarships and other assistance to eligible Mexican-American students. Applicant must be enrolled at a four year college to  receive this award. Applicant must also have at least a 3.0 GPA, and must continue to demonstrate academic excellence. Recipients of this award must also be active in community affairs and complete 100 hours of community service.

• The MassMutual Multicultural College Scholarship is for students of Mexican-American descent. Applicants must have already completed their first year of studies to be eligible for this award. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and academic excellence. This award is open to all sophomore, junior and senior students.

• The Mexican-American Grocers Association offers a scholarship to students of Mexican-American descent that are going to school to study business. Applicants must already be in their second year of college. Applicants must demonstrate academic achievement, and carry at least a 2.5 GPA. Applicants must include their academic transcripts with their application, along with a written essay.

• The National Hispanic Scholar Recognition program is for students who may be looking for other forms of financial aid to pay for college. Applicants must take at least the PSAT exams to be considered for this award. This test is one of the standards by which the applicant will be judged. Students who score well on the test are then asked to complete the full application. Applicants must be students in good standing, and must also be active in community affairs. Contact the guidance office at the high school or the college financial aid office to get started.

Scholarships For The Polish American Student

Paying for college can become quite an expensive task. With the costs of just about everything going up, more students are turning to other financial aid sources to help them pay for college. Financial aid is available in grants, scholarships and loans. Loans are generally expensive when it comes time to pay them back. Grants are free for everyone, and offered mostly by the federal government.

There are scholarships available for a lot of different things. If you’re a tall person, there is a scholarship for that, if you’re left-handed, there is a scholarship for that. There are many different scholarship and grant opportunities available for students of Polish-American descent. Many of these scholarships and grants are offered through organizations around the world.

• The Kosciuszko Foundations Scholarships are awarded each year to students of Polish-American heritage. Non Need-Based Scholarship Information

While many scholarships and grants are based on things like financial need, there are still many non need based scholarships available as well. There are other names for this type of scholarship. It is often called a merit scholarship, in other places it is referred to as an academic achievement scholarship. Statistically most need based scholarships are administered by the federal and state governments. And on the other side of the coin, most merit based and other non need based scholarships are administered by charitable organizations and companies in the private sector.

If you are a high school junior or senior, chances are you have heard of the National Merit Scholarships.

The Coca-Cola Scholars program awards 250 different scholarships to high school seniors. Fifty students receive $20,000 in scholarships. The rest receive $10,000 in awards. To be considered for this award, the student must be graduating high school with a 3.0 out of a possible 4.0 GPA. The Coca-Cola Scholars program also offers scholarships to students attending community colleges. These scholarships are based on merit, applicant must demonstrate academic excellence, be active in their community, and exhibit qualities of leadership. Over 100,000 students will apply.

The Intel Science Talent Search awards scholarships to the top winners in its yearly science competition. This is one of the most competitive awards students can apply for. The winners are chosen for their potential as future researchers and scientists. 300 semi-finalists will be awarded $1000 dollar prizes. Out of the semi-finalists, 40 students are chosen for the finalists round and are invited to Washington D.C.’s Science Talent Institute. This is where the finalists are selected and awarded their scholarships. First place receives a four year scholarship worth $100,000 dollars.

Being a runner up here isn’t so bad. Second place is awarded a $75,000 award. Third place gets $50,000 for school. Fourth through sixth place entitles the student to a $25,000 dollar award. Finishing between seventh and tenth places will bring in a $10,000 dollar award. The last remaining thirty students each receive $5,000 toward their studies, and all finalists receive new computers.

The electronics giant Siemens-Westinghouse holds a competition similar in scope to the Intel awards. To be considered for this award, students must pick a topic of scientific interest, or with scientific applications. Students then research this topic, and prepare an extensive report for the selection committee. Students are allowed to work on this project in groups or individually.

First prize for the individual, and first prize for a group is $100,000 in scholarship money. The second place through sixth place runners up can receive awards totaling up to $10,000 a year. This competition is judged and administered by the College Board. Prizes are offered by the company.

How To Find Financial Aid

One of the most frightening things about college can be paying for it. Nothing good comes cheaply, and the same thing can be said for a college education. Though at first the prospect might seem daunting there is help out there. Financial aid is available to any eligible student so that they can attend any accredited school they wish.

Financial aid comes in three basic forms. They are grants, which are freely given by the federal and state governments to help students pay for the cost of going to school. There are also scholarships. Scholarships are similar in intent to grants, however sometimes scholarships come with stipulations. These stipulations can be simple, such as the graduate agrees to work in a specific place for a specific time as payment for monies received.

Loans are the third type of financial aid that is available. But loans should only be used as a very final resort. While it is true that the student can get loans to cover college costs, loans have to be repaid after the student graduates. This is an expensive alternative that should be avoided.

When it comes to looking for scholarships, the search can be broken down into three categories. The first, which is locally, involves the student locating and contacting charities and other special interest groups in their area. Many of these groups will offer students scholarships if the student can demonstrate financial need or good academic standing. High school guidance counselors often can also be a good source of available scholarships.

The next place to start looking for information on scholarships is in the schools financial aid office. Many colleges have extensive information on the scholarship opportunities available. This can save time and effort both. The financial aid office is often happy to help the student find whatever scholarships they may be eligible for. Some may have the forms there in the office, and most often will offer to help the student fill them out and file them.

The last place to look after all those other avenues have been exhausted is online. Actually some people like to start their scholarship searches here. There are a lot of scholarship matching services out there that will point the student at potential scholarship matches. When using services like these, it is best to stick with the ones that don’t cost anything. The ones that are free are the ones that are truly there to help the student. You shouldn’t have to pay money to get money.

When it comes to paying for college, the second year is often at least as expensive as the first. In most cases it is more so. The search for financial aid becomes an ongoing process. As a college sophomore, do not expect to be able to continue to rely on the financial aid from last year. A lot can change from one year to the next, including important factors like financial need and academic achievement. So as a sophomore it is still important to make use of all the available resources out there, it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan.

The Ronald Reagan College Leaders Scholarship Programs recognizes college students that are doing their best to promote and emulate American values in their everyday lives on campus. This scholarship is available to college sophomores and juniors. Applicants must be enrolled full time at an accredited four year college. Applicants must demonstrate academic achievement by composing an essay on their involvement in leadership activities and in activities that espouse American ideals.

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to three hundred sophomores and juniors. This award covers up to $7500 a year towards educational expenses. Applicants are selected by their schools, the school selections are forwarded to the Scholarship Committee. These scholarships are generally awarded to those students who major in mathematics, science and engineering.

The Buick Achievers Scholarship Award is available to second year college students. Second year students are eligible for the $1000 per academic year award. Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence. The successful applicant will also be recognized as a student leader within their community. The Buick Achievers Scholarship is for the student who wants to get things done.

The scholarships listed above are one small sampling of the number of scholarships and grants that are out there. A student may apply for as many scholarships and grants as they wish. As long as they continue their education, and continue to meet other requirements, there is no limit to how much aid one student can receive. Students are encouraged to apply for more than one thing, and to search out alternative sources of funding.

The sophomore year in college can be just as challenging as the first. The student has gained some experience, and also has a better idea of what their expenses are and how best to manage them. On the other hand, with a new school year comes new academic challenges and changes. Different courses may require more materials. There are other unexpected expenses as well. Don’t stop looking for financial aid sources once you’ve enrolled. Even if you don’t apply it is still good to know what options are available to you.

Scholarship choices for college freshmen

Graduating from high school is a milestone achievement, something to be celebrated. But once all the presents have been opened, and the new car has been taken for a test drive, what comes next. A lot of students choose to move directly into the workforce, or join the military after leaving school. Some will choose to go on to college.

With the costs of just about everything going up, going to college might seem like something that isn’t affordable. This might be true if the student had to pay for all the costs themselves. Fortunately there is help out there. The best place to start looking for financial aid is through the federal government. They have many grants, scholarships, work-study programs, and loans, all designed to help the student pay for the cost of attending college.

The Siemens Foundation is a leader in recognizing the potential of today’s students. To date they have awarded over seven million dollars to students who plan to attend college and study in fields like, science, advanced mathematics, and engineering. To win these scholarships, the student must enter the Siemens Foundation Competition which is held every year.

The student may enter these competitions as an individual, or as part of an academic team. In the event of a team win, the prize is split up equally and awarded to all members. There are two levels to this competition where students can win money for college based on academic achievement. The first is at the regional level. The student can be awarded up to $3000 per semester for a victory here. Then there is the national level, where the student can be awarded a scholarship of up to $100,000 dollars.

The Dell Scholars Program is for those students who may not be able to afford college otherwise. To be eligible as a Dell Scholar, a student must demonstrate an ability to overcome adversity and a determination to succeed in life. Eligible students must also demonstrate financial need. The Dell Scholars Program awards 250 of these scholarships to students around the country.

Applicant must be graduating, and have a GPA of at least 2.4. Applicant must also plan to attend a college program or course after graduation. Applicant can choose to participate in a college readiness program for up to two years, but after that must enroll at an accredited institution. If the student is or becomes a member of their high school Key Club, they become eligible for several national and international scholarships. The Key Club International Scholarship Program currently offers seven different scholarships to eligible students that are also club members. The applicant must be a member in good standing, that is graduating with at least a B average overall, and is planning on attending school after graduation.
